Recently, I started a group on Facebook Ask BK to help people with technical support. I come across many queries and the most asked question is how to share your Android data connection as Wi-Fi Hotspot. You share your data connection with up to eight devices at once, by turning your phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. The steps mentioned below might be slightly different depending on the make of your Android device. (Not Android device support these features.)
Steps to share your data connection as Wi-Fi hotspot on Android device
- Goto Settings > Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
- Check Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
After some time your data connection will be shown in notification bar as Wi-Fi hotspot as shown below. Now you can use your portable Wi-Fi hotspot with any Wi-Fi enabled device.

Uncheck Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to stop sharing your data connection. You can even change the name of your Android device’s Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and secure it.
How to rename and secure your portable hotspot
- Goto Settings > Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
- Portable Wi-Fi hotspot should be checked.
- Open Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings.
- Open Configure Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Rename your SSID (Wi-Fi name).
- Select WPA2 PSK (most secire) in security option.
- Enter Password for your Wi-Fi hotspot and you are done.
